Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

I started reading Lock and Key because it was recommended by one of my favorite authors, Emily Giffin. This is a young adult novel that really doesn't matter if you're reading it as an adult because it sucked me in immediately. It is about a 17 year old girl named Ruby who lives with her drug-addict, alcoholic mother. One night her mother doesn't show up, and Ruby takes care of herself for a month before people start to notice. Her sister Cora, who is ten years older, is called by social services and Ruby goes to live with her. I really enjoyed reading the book because it was one where it really had a strong message of what family is and that sometimes we can surprise ourselves with what we can handle in life. 4.5/5
